"Nobody plays like Dan..."- Al Kooper

"You really got to me." - Muddy Waters

"Always a powerful guitarist." - Bob Dylan

I’m Gonna Live The Life I Sing About is the album that legendary guitarist Danny Kalb says "Is the record I always wanted to make" and marks his debut on Sojourn Records. I’m Gonna Live The Life I Sing About was produced by Mark Ambrosino and recorded at The Madhouse studio in Queens, NY featuring Kalb performing in both electric and acoustic trio settings.

The bulk of these performances were captured in 2006 through 2007 but other tracks are gems that Kalb has been stockpiling since the late 1990’s, plucked from relaxed periodic sessions with his various live line-ups. Kalb’s playing throughout is dazzling, yet understated, no-nonsense yet deeply emotional -- the work of an undisputed Old Master.

Danny Kalb has long been recognized as one of America's foremost guitarists. He is best known as the founding member of the legendary the Blues Project along with Al Kooper, a band that became one of the best-loved of the mid '60's, developing a strong national following and influencing untold numbers of aspiring young blues guitarists.

Born into a musical family, Danny was raised in Mt. Vernon, NY. He spent his childhood surrounded by his parents' folk, blues, jazz and classical records. He picked up the guitar at the age of 13 and hasn't put it down since. He attended the University of Wisconsin but couldn't resist the pull of Greenwich Village which was in the midst of a musical explosion boasting the likes of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Richie Havens, Eric Anderson and Odetta. A protege of the great Dave Van Ronk, Danny established himself on this seminal folk and blues revival scene, first as a solo performer and session player with Phil Ochs, Pete Seeger and others, and later in his own right and in The New Strangers, his duo with Sam Charters. He absorbed the scene, jamming with blues greats Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.

Danny founded the Blues Project in 1965. One of the classic bands of the period, their The Blues Project Live at Cafe Au Go-Go won great critical acclaim and won them their first gold record. On this album Danny's signature tune "Alberta," a soft ballad and "Down To Louisiana," a rocking electric blues, established him as one of the preeminent blues players of his generation. Four albums followed that cemented their place in rock history.

In the years that followed, he formed other bands and spent several years in retreat, living mainly in California. During this time, he continued to perfect his art and perform for his loyal following. He also contributed to recordings by Judy Collins, Phil Ochs and Dave Van Ronk among others. In addition to playing all dimensions of the blues guitar -- both electric and traditional -- he explored other genres of guitar composition: modern atonal and open tunings. Danny is also a teacher and has taught seminars and clinics.

Danny has performed as a solo artist and in trio settings up and down the East Coast in recent years, and this is the part of his career that’s inspired I’m Gonna Live The Life I Sing About. Gritty blues, originals, and standards, his touch on the guitar is as exciting and individual as ever. From folk to blues to jazz, Danny's experimental mindset and talent played significant part in redefining musical genres and boundaries and he is still an influence, as ahead now as he was when he began.

NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR SALE Long recognized as one of America’s foremost guitarists, Kalb’s Moving in Blue is the follow up to his 2009 critically acclaimed Sojourn Records’ solo debut, I’m Gonna Live The Life I Sing About.  The new record is a two CD collection of 26 tracks, including recent sessions with former Blues Project bandmates, Al Kooper and Roy Blumenfeld, as well as additional material recorded over the years by Sojourn co-founder, Mark Ambrosino at his Madhouse Studio.  New tracks on Moving in Blue include Johnny Cash’s “So Doggone Lonesome”, John Lee Hooker’s“I’m Leaving”and Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love” as well as many others.     Kalb recorded Moving in Blue over a period of years at the Madhouse Studio with sessions focusing on solo recordings as well as recordings with Danny’s trio. In either setting, these songs show both the depth and connection that Danny exudes playing the music he loves, his voice and famous guitar work taking perhaps familiar songs into a new terrain.

Danny Kalb Reviews - Excerpts
Kalb's instrumental performance is consistently top notch. He makes that guitar sing, wail, plead, and cry. He carefully annunciates the lyrics so that their full meanings clearly come through for full effect. Kalb understands the dance between the words and the strings that give the acoustic music power to knock the listener out without the need for volume. He projects the blues by carefully attending to its meanings and nuances.

Danny has finally released the album that should have followed the breakup of The Blues Project over 40 years ago. His baritone voice is rich and strong. His guitar playing, both acoustic and electric is mesmerizing...The album treads the familiar ground of Little Richard, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker Reverend Gary Davis and Jimmy Reed, but Danny Kalb honors each songwriter by making each song his own. If you have ever questioned a white man's right to sing the blues you will never hear a more authentic blues man than Danny Kalb and this album is a testament to that fact. To hear him live in a small room is pure magic and this album captures that feeling.
-Stan Beinstein/WDST-FM (Woodstock, NY)

I'm Gonna Live The Life I Sing About proves that Danny Kalb is one of the best practitioners of the blues in music today. He has a long, if under the radar legacy, and it's good to hear him at his best. This album should be a definite buy.

Dan never ceases to sieve everything through an innovative eye and dexterous hand, and we can only hope that this new spate of activity and releases is the crossroads of a renewed old pro because master he was, master he is, and, the Fates willing, master he will continue to be for years to come.

Danny Kalb Trio Goes to Jail (with Don Wilcock)

Don’t worry. Danny is free on permanent blues bail. Just referencing the great Don Wilcock article title that is in Blues Wax describing Danny’s recent show at Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility in Rutland, Vermont on Friday, April 1, 2011. Don writes it so well, no point saying anymore, except that Danny used the same instincts that forms his music – to engage the men who came to hear him play. Talk about a potentially tough crowd. No small feat. You can read Don Wilcock’s article here.
